When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished, saying, "Who then can be saved?" But Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." (Matthew 19:25-26 ESV)
Nothing we can do will give us everlasting life in the kingdom of God. Only through faith in Jesus Christ as our Savior can we have eternal life.
Should we not help our neighbor in trouble if we believe in Jesus as our Savior? If we see someone being wronged do we not come to the rescue? If we help our neighbor and defend those being wronged, do those acts alone save us from God's wrath on judgment day?
We are to do good works, but only out of faith. For works without faith are empty, meant for our own glorification and not God's. Everything we do should have the goal of pleasing God.
